If you don’t work in the office all the time, you may have hear about drop in coworking.
A drop-in desk refers to a workspace that is set up to handle unscheduled visits by workers who don’t have a long-term desk in the facility, but need one for that day.
These spaces are not occupied by one person all the time, but they’re still vital for flexibility in the workplace. As more people are working remotely and not tied to one location anymore, there will be more drop-in desk workers in the future.
One of the nice things about setting up drop-in desks for workers is they don’t need to be fancy or expensive. After all, they are not going to be occupied every day, so it doesn’t need to be set up for a person who is there all the time.
Like a hotel room, the drop-in desk or drop desk simply needs to have the basics.
First, it’s important that the desk and chair is comfortable; one of the issues with working in a foreign place is that the furniture is uncomfortable or unfamiliar.
Also, you should note if there are any distractions around the drop desks that you set up. This doesn’t mean there should be a blank wall for the worker to stare at, but it is often better to make drop desks a bit more isolated than what regular employees have.
However, while the desks may need to have a bit more privacy, this doesn’t mean they should be hard to find. The person doesn’t know your space, so the desk should be easy to find.
To make the drop desks work best in your space, you need to consider a few things:
- How often do you have remote workers in your office?
- How much of your staff is working remotely vs in the office?
- Which departments in the company have the most people working remotely?
- How many desks do you have that are occupied and unoccupied?
Once you have this information, you should be able to set up the number of drop desks that you need.
Other than comfortable furniture, you just need to be sure that the spaces have enough electrical outlets and have fast Internet service.
Now that you know more about drop in desks, you should be able to set them up and give the workers that come in the space necessary.
