Have you tried to save plastic at home?
It’s not a secret anymore that plastic’s invasion of the planet is a really serious issue; it’s a global problem. Plastic has become a constant element in our lives. You can find it everywhere. Product packaging, cosmetic ingredients, food storage, kitchen utensils, etc.
Although recycling can help reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in your house, only a few types of plastic can be recycled by most governments. The plastic garbage that ends up in the ocean takes hundreds of years to degrade, and there’s increasing concern about the toxins it releases into our environment.
Experts say our oceans will be tied up with more plastic than fish by 2050! Reducing the consumption of plastics requires not only a change in our habits but also a change in people’s mindsets.
Tips to Save Plastic at Home
In Bali, our famous beaches like Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak were buried by up to 90 tonnes of plastic rubbish – this is becoming an annual event. Not only because of the rainy season, but the trash handling system also hasn’t been effective in Indonesia.
But at the end of the day, it boils down to this: our society uses way too much plastic.
The good thing is that it is in our hands, to turn this situation around. We have the absolute power to change the way we consume plastics – starting from your home. It is much simpler than it seems.
Here are some tips to save plastic at home that can change your life, your environment, and the life of our planet.
If you go shopping, remember to take a reusable bag
I’m a reusable bag enthusiast. You’ll find an array of them at my place: cloth, string, wicker – you name it, I’ve got it. Why? Because every time I step out that door, I’m armed with these eco-friendly superheroes.
You see, I believe in the power of reusable bags. They’re not just handy for carrying my snack treasures; they’re also my small contribution to a healthier planet. With every reusable bag I use, I’m saying no to single-use plastics and yes to a greener, cleaner Earth.
So, next time you’re heading out, don’t forget your reusable sidekick. Whether it’s a sturdy cloth bag, a charming string tote, or a rustic wicker carrier – each one is a step towards a better, more sustainable world. And who says you can’t save the planet, one snack run at a time?
Replace your food and drink storage
Plastic wrap, plastic storage, and plastic baggies are worth reevaluating. Why not pack a bento box? Why not use jars or glass containers in the fridge? These types of containers can be used instead of throwing away plastic zipper bags or disposable ones.
Back in those days, when I was still in elementary school, I recalled that my mother always packaged my lunch using a Tupperware container. When I still work in the office, I also bring my own lunch. So, if you eat at work, a Tupperware container is part of your day. Well, now I’m working at home so I save plastic at home!
I suggest you change your routine and opt for glass or stainless steel containers. Not only that, you can bring your on-the-go containers, ocean bottles, coffee thermos, and utensils with you so when you get food or drinks to-go, you won’t waste any packaging. The shops might even thank you for saving them the cost of to-go containers!
Not only do you save the planet, but also save your health because some of these plastic containers can release harmful substances.

Put your plastic waste in the correct recycling container
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it’s easy to overlook the finer details. That’s where we stumble, especially when it comes to recycling. The plastic waste that we toss away might just end up in the wrong container, and that’s not doing anyone any favors.
So, here’s a little nudge for all of us – before you bid adieu to your waste, take a moment to think about where it truly belongs. Those little symbols on the packaging aren’t just there for decoration; they’re guiding us toward responsible recycling.
Let’s break it down: plastics, glass, paper, and all their cousins each have their own designated recycling homes. Mixing them up? Well, it’s like inviting chaos to the recycling party. So, next time you’re about to toss, pause and give your waste the proper send-off it deserves. It’s a small step for you but a giant leap toward a greener, cleaner world.
Make those around you aware of the need to save plastic at home
Imagine this: not only are you cutting down on plastic consumption at home, but you’re also inspiring your entire family to follow suit by setting a shining example. The impact of your actions on the good of the planet? It multiplies exponentially.
Now, let’s talk about spreading eco-love. If you have eco-warrior friends or co-workers who share your passion for a greener planet, here’s a treat for you – a list of eco-friendly gifts that will have them grinning from ear to ear. It’s not just a present; it’s a pledge to protect our precious Earth, one thoughtful gift at a time.
Go zero waste for items you use every day
Going 100% Zero Waste is a somewhat unrealistic step for many people, but you don’t have to go all in to make it count. Start with what you can do and make a change.
Here’s my tip to make the biggest impact: Swap one or two items you use on a daily basis with a zero-waste alternative. Start by thinking about items that you use often that come in plastic packaging. For example:
- Stop buying bottles of water, unless it’s necessary. If you’re privileged to live in a place where the water is drinkable, great! If not, invest in a filter system.
- Change your cosmetics or bathroom products that use microplastics with free-plastic products.
- Use cleaning pods, wooden dish brushes, or eco sponges for cleaning up.
As a free plastic shop, Green Pear Eco offers us various zero-waste products. From bamboo safety razors, glass coffee cups (which are so adorable), and natural deodorant.
These are things you use on a daily basis. Imagine how great it would be if you could eliminate the amount of plastic used in your life if you were able to save plastic at home!
I hope you’re able to find a few tips here that seem easy to do to save plastic at home. Well, instead of trying them all at once, take it one step at a time. And before you know it, saving plastic at home will be a part of your daily life—not only for you but for the people around you as well.
Let me know your tips to save plastic at home below. I’d like to know more ways we can save our planet from humankind!

This was a great read! I am trying to get even more mindful this year, have been using a reusable bottle for years and started out with things in the bathroom, sometimes swaps are so easy that you ask why you even bought plastic one in the first place! x
I know it’s going to be far easier for me to do some of these things when I’m not living in a townhouse, but rather, in a home of my own (preferably one with a dishwasher and laundry machine). I realize right now I definitely use too much plastic, but I don’t have as many ways around it due to finances and circumstances. But it’s in my heart, I promise that. I do love my reusable straws, I try to use reusable containers, reusable shopping bags, etc. I’m making baby steps for now!
These are great tips, thank you! I need to stop single-use plastic in my day-to-day life and be a little more sustainable x
Great tips here! We’re so used to plastic around us, but some reusable items are even cheaper, nicer and easier.
Right? It’s really great! Thank you Lisa 😀
My roommate has been trying to get me to save plastic, for years! Thank you for the deeper explanation!
Ow nice to hear that! Thank you 😀
We are trying to get back into the habit of using our drink cups and reusable straws everywhere we go. And now I’m taking my reusable bags to the grocery store because they are willing to use them again.
So nice! Thank you Sarah 😀
I love that you are taking your own advice and sharing ways we can reduce our plastic consumption. Plastic is truly a dangerous and building thing, especially in the oceans. We truly see it when the ocean starts throwing our waste up onto the beaches.
I have been using reusable bags for two years now and use only glass storage containers. It feels good to find ways every day to be sustainable.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much Jaya 😀 I love my reusable bags and non-free plastic products so much 😀
Indeed, we can make a huge difference in our environment when we know how to save and reuse plastic at home. I’m proud that here in our household, we reuse plastic as many times as we can! We incorporate everything you suggested. From using plastic bags as garbage containers, we use starbucks drink cup as every day cups, when we go shopping etc. Love all your suggestions. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us Monique 😀
Great tips! Bad thing is that recycling in my country pretty much doesn’t exist. It’s awful that we have basically more plastic than fish…

In my place as well 🙁 I wish things will change for the better x
Love this! I have been taking lots of steps to be more eco-friendly within the past 2 years. Even my cleaning products are eco-friendly now! The amount of plastic in the ocean terrifies me so much! Thanks for sharing, Merry xx

Wow nicely done! I’m taking baby steps for it 😀 Thanks Lynn x
Here in Australia, the government makes it super easy to recycle, so I always do that. Also, I try to limit how much plastic I use.
Great post! 🙂
